Abstract

The most striking aspect of the post-modern novel, which Orhan Pamuk wrote based on the metafiction technique, is that the process constitutes the plot. The novel keeps its originality, combining the humorous and the fantastic one, and the thriller and the ordinary one. The reader witnesses the life story, from 1969 to 2012, of a boza seller, who has immigrated to Istanbul, along with the changes in Istanbul. What makes the main character Mevlut Karataş extraordinary is the strangeness in his mind. The novel, the name of which was given by the romantic English poet William Wordsworth, has an aspect of intertextuality and the word ‘strange’ is integrated into every point of its whole structure. The notion ’strangeness’ that Mevlut questions in all his experiences has a primary significance. In this study, which will be carried out at both semantic and lexical level, it will be noticed that the word ‘strange’ has carries other meanings beyond placing in the name of the novel.
